Mayo Clinic is one of the best healthcare facilities in the United States. The clinic was established between 1819 and 1911 in England. It began operations in the United States in 1846 after Doctor William Worrall Mayo, one of the founders, relocated to Indiana. He was later elected to Minnesota and established the first Mayo Clinic in the United States. The clinic established itself as a leading healthcare facility in the United States by partnering with other healthcare providers. For example, in 1986, it partnered with Rochester Methodist Hospital and Saint Mary’s Hospital to serve more clients. It then extended its operations into Florida after acquiring 400 acres donated by the Davis family (Mayo Clinic, 2023). The next expansion was into Arizona, where the clinic established a network of community-based medical services in Wisconsin, Lowa, and Minnesota. The Mayo Clinic Care Network was then launched in 2011. The network included various facilities that had access to the Mayo Clinic experts and clinic protocols. In 2019, the clinic expanded its operations into the United Arab Emirates in 2019 after partnering with the SEHA Abu Dhabi Health Services Corporation (Mayo Clinic, 2023). In 2020, the clinic opened a healthcare facility in London after partnering with the Oxford University Clinic. Mayo Clinic is currently at the top position in medical innovation and has gained global recognition due to clinical trials and the provision of innovative therapies. The company also gained a leading position in medical research during the COVID-19 pandemic after it became the first healthcare institution to provide plasma exchange to patients.
The retention of qualified nurses is essential at the Mayo Clinic because it will help ensure that there are enough nurses to attend to the patients. According to Nantsupawat et al. (2015), nurse shortage is among the leading causes of nurse burnout in healthcare. The main impact of nurse burnout is medical errors that put patients’ lives at risk. Therefore, Mayo Clinic needs to invest in nurse retention. One of the strategies that the organization can use to increase the number of BSN registered nurses is ensuring that its facilities have an adequate nurse-to-patient ratio. I would recommend using internship programs to get individuals with the knowledge and skills that can be nurtured to meet the organization’s expectations. The organization may partner with learning institutions to get interns and encourage community members to volunteer for various positions within the clinic to enable the organization to identify talented employees who should be retained. The second measure the clinic should consider to increase the number of BSN registered nurses is motivating the nurses based on their performance. According to Melhem & Ozgit (2019), motivation is one of the most effective strategies for increasing employee retention. Therefore, Mayo Clinic should create a performance review system and reward employees who perform well. The company should also set goals for the employees and reward employees who meet those goals to increase motivation. The third measure the organization can take to increase employee retention is improving its communication strategy. The organization should establish clear communication lines to ensure that all employees understand what is expected of them, thus creating a sense of belonging and increasing employee retention. The organization should also ensure that there are various communication channels to enable employees to express themselves and share their opinions, thus facilitating job satisfaction which is among the factors contributing to employee retention.
Mayo Clinic needs to establish an effective nurse leader succession strategy to facilitate effective succession of nurse leadership without disrupting operations within its healthcare facilities. One nurse leader succession planning strategy that the organization should consider is identifying and engaging employees with leadership skills and competencies. The organization may invest in training employees who exhibit leadership skills and competencies to prepare them to be nurse leaders for effective nurse leader succession. The second strategy that the organization can use is building and documenting job procedures, processes, and controls to track the performance of employees in completing various roles and responsibilities. The organization should also document the responsibilities of each employee to monitor the performance of employees with leadership responsibilities so that it can select suitable candidates eligible for the nurse leader position.
